New England Shorebird Guide

How to use this guide for all of your birding adventures.

Shorebirds are a group of sandpipers, plovers and other associated species with rapidly declining populations. This is particularly true of shorebirds that nest in Arctic or far northern areas and migrate through our region to Central or South America. These long-distance migratory birds are among the least known of our wildlife.

To familiarize folks with these birds and encourage conservation efforts, we have created New England Shorebird Guide, a digital-only field guide accessible freely on the Bird Observer site. This web app can be downloaded to your smart phone, tablet or computer.

In the talk, the author will explain to you some of the challenges faced by shorebirds in their epic migrations and also explain the workings of the shorebird app.

About Soheil

Soheil Zendeh, the author of New England Shorebird Guide, has been monitoring and reporting on shorebird since the mid-1970s. Watching migrant shorebirds populations crash by 30% to 60% or more over the past 40 years motivated him to create this online identification guide, freely accessible on smart-phone. By helping to familiarize people who may be interested but not well informed about shorebirds, their plumages, long-distance journeys, and threatened life-cycles, Soheil aims to create a larger constituency for the conservation of these birds. 

Having been born in Iran and grown up in Morocco, Soheil has been a Massachusetts resident since the early 1960s. Currently he and his wife live in Littleton, MA.
